Encrypting or making fields private offers an extra level of security when using Equus Platform. When fields are encrypted they are encrypted in the database and protected "at rest" meaning that data is protected while the data is not moving through various networks. When fields are private, no encryption will be initiated as it is masking the data from users who do not have the viewing rights.
An Encrypted field is a specific field within the Equus Platform that has been secured from visibility based on security role. Once the field has been encrypted a user's security role must grant the role access to decrypt the specific field otherwise (Encrypted) is displayed as the field value.
Similar to Encrypted fields, Private fields will mask certain field values when enabled in the Data Encryption and Security screen under Configuration. Private fields are not encrypted thus only masking it from users who are not granted rights to view the field value.
The Data Encryption and Security screen lists all the Equus Platform fields available for encryption. This list can be created by writing a user report and reporting on fields where Supports Encryption/Private equals ' Yes'. After encrypting a field, the Field Privacy Rights section on the Role Maintenance screen must be updated for the necessary security role(s).
