What are Business Rules?
Business Rules are the next generation of calculations offering a new intuitive way to create calculations. They can be created at a company and a system level. Using the user-friendly packaging of tools anyone can write, read, update and maintain calculations in the system without being a SQL (Structured Query Language) and/or User Report expert.
Where are Business Rules used within the Equus Platform?
Business Rules are currently limited to these areas within the Equus Platform:
to calculate a Cost Estimate line item
to calculate a Compensation Calculation line item
to validate expenses by integrating with existing Expense Audit Rules
to enhance Take Action triggers criteria for Quick Workflows
to enhance Take Action triggers criteria for starting Checklists and to complete Checklist Items
to calculate money outputs for Election Set choices
to calculate a What-If Cost Estimate line item
to calculate the cost of a desired benefit choice for a benefit set line item and choice calculation (for the minimum, maximum, and recommended amounts)
to enhance trigger criteria for scheduled pulse checks
to enhance trigger criteria to display pulse check questions in the Mobile Employee Experience
to enhance Take Action triggers criteria for starting resource allocation rulesets and allocating resources based on rules
to determine PE Risk Assessment rule
Planned future releases will see Business Rules adopted in more features which use logic-based rules.
Why use Business Rules and what are the benefits?
Quicker to create correct calculations.
A dedicated Business Rules screen displaying three tabs: 'Configured Rules', 'Components' and 'History'. All tabs support searching capabilities to make it easier to locate a business rule / component and know when and where it has been executed in the Equus Platform.
Easier to create and understand logic without having to create logic in multiple places. Logic is written in English using the Business Rules calculation screen in the Equus Platform. For Cost Estimates and Compensation Calculations, there is no need to use spreadsheets with complicated formulae or User Reports with complex SQL, however, spreadsheets can be used to feed a business rule variable input if desired.
There is a function within the feature that simplifies data table lookups and use of data. There is no need to use spreadsheets or User Reports to retrieve data from tables.
Once business rules and components (table lookup, math, function, input variable and multi-context) are created, they can be used many times saving time and effort in creating large volumes of calculations. Using the multi-context feature, one business rule can be used in What-If Cost Estimates, Core Flex and Cost Estimates at the same time dramatically reducing the work required to create and maintain calculations.
For any business rules and components that are created, you can track where they are used in the Equus Platform.
The logic created can be tested using real data without previously attaching it to an item such as a Cost Estimate line item to see the results.
Troubleshooting is made easier and quicker because you can see the results for each step of the calculation (True or False) to understand how the final output is reached.
