Menu Item User Type
This section allows you to specify the user types that should be able to see and use this menu. You may decide to setup different menu items by user type for the same page. For example, when an external employee user logs in you may want them to see a menu option called "My Contact Information", whereas an external client user should see "Employee Contact Details".
The Landing Page check box allows you to indicate which menu/page the user should be taken to when they first log into the system. You might think of this as their "home" page. You can specify this by user type. There can only be one landing page per user type. When adding Menu Item User Type Access, for each User Type added, you can specify the current page as the Landing Page or not. If the page is set as the Landing Page, this is the page the users of that particular User Type will go to first, once they log in to the portal.
By default the system will take external employee, external client, and vendor users to the announcements page. There is a system preference that can override this system default. The landing page setting on this screen will override both the system default and the system preference. Care should be taken when selecting the landing page. You should not try to have a user land on a page that needs additional criteria. For example, you should not have an external client user land on the employee details page. The system does not know which employee to select. Even taking an external employee user to an assignment level page is risky. It is possible that the employee might have more or less than one active assignment/relocation at a time. The system will try to warn you if it thinks you have selected an inappropriate page.
The Portal Announcements page is typically a safe page for all user types. The Portal Dashboard page is a good option for external client and external employee users. The Portal Payroll User Home Page was specifically designed for external payroll users.
Watchouts
If a user attempts to set a Landing Page for a particular User Type and there is already a Landing Page set for that user type, a warning message will be displayed stating, “A different record has already been flagged as the landing page for this user type”.
If a user attempts to access a page where the User Type Access has not been defined for that user, an "access denied" message will be displayed.
Things to Note
Not all pages are eligible as a Landing Page. For example, an assignment detail page (i.e., Employee Contacts) should not be set as the landing page for an External Client user type. The reason is because the system will not know which employee’s Employee Contact page to display (since the client user has access to many employees).
Creating a Landing Page requires careful consideration and strategic planning. If a user tries to set a page that might not be a good candidate, the system may give a warning message stating, “This Page may not be a valid Landing Page for the selected User Type(s)”.
